He is one of the few actors with a pan-India appeal, acting in films across seven different languages.He first gained recognition in the Tamil film industry through Mani Ratnam’s successful romance film Alaipayuthey (2000).

He first gained recognition in the Tamil film industry through Mani Ratnam’s successful romance film Alaipayuthey (2000). His Bollywood career kick-started with ‘Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein’ (2001), followed by ‘Rang De Basanti’ (2006), ‘Guru’ (2007) and ‘3 Idiots’ (2009), which went on to become the highest-grossing Indian film of all times. His other box office hits include ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ (2011) and ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’ (2015).

Madhavan has also worked as a film producer, first making ‘Evano Oruvan’with Leukos Films before setting up his production company. Tricolour Films’, to produce ‘Saala Khadoos’ (2016).He earned two awards in the Tamil film, Anbe Sivam (2003)- ‘Best Supporting Actor’. He also garnered his 1st Filmfare Award for ‘Best Male Debut’ for his acclaimed performance in the Tamil film, Aayutha Ezhuthu. His sports drama Irudhi Suttru (2016) also won him a Filmfare Award in ‘Best Actor – Tamil’.Madhavan’s web series, ‘Decoupled’, became the second most-watched show on Netflix in India.

Madhavan is noted for his philanthropic activities and promotes various causes such as the environment, health and education. He is very vocal about animal protection and was awarded PETA’s ‘Person of the year’ award in 2012.
