Dohar is a renowned Indian folk music ensemble dedicated to preserving and popularizing the traditional music of Bengal and Northeast India. Founded in 1999 in Kolkata by Rajib Das and Kalika Prasad Bhattacharya, the band’s name, meaning “chorus,” reflects its mission to unite voices in celebration of regional heritage. Dohar has played a key role in revitalizing Bengali folk music, performing across India and internationally, and introducing it to new generations.
The band faced a major loss in 2017 when co-founder Kalika Prasad Bhattacharya passed away. Under Rajib Das’ leadership, Dohar continued its mission with the current lineup of Rittik Guchait, Mrignabhi Chattopadhyay, Satyajit Sarkar, Niranjan Haldar, Amit Sur, and Sudipto Chakraborty, delivering energetic and authentic performances.
Dohar’s music blends traditional folk with contemporary arrangements, making it both educational and entertaining. Their acclaimed albums include Bandhur Deshey, Banglar Gaan Shikorer Taan, Rupsagare, MATI’SWAR, and UNISHER DAAK. Through their work, Dohar continues to inspire audiences, acting as cultural ambassadors who keep India’s folk heritage alive.
